Social Characteristics
- Inappropriate or unusual body language, gestures, and facial expressions
- Difficulty recognizing their own basic emotions or those of others (e.g.mad, happy or sad)
- May not make, or have minimal eye contact during conversation
- Difficulties in beginning, maintaining or ending a conversation
- Lack of interest in other people or in sharing interests or achievements (e.g. showing you a drawing)
- May have difficulty staying on topic during conversation,
- May talk talk excessively, deliver lecture or lesson about a favorite topic, rather than engage in two way conversation about it
- Unlikely to approach others or to pursue social interaction; comes across as aloof and detached; prefers to be alone
- Difficulty understanding other people’s feelings, reactions, and nonverbal cues
- Does not like being to being touched
- Difficulty or failure to make friends with children the same age
- May have difficulty staying on topic
- Talk aloud to self in public unaware that others can hear their self talk
- May make statements that are factually true but are socially inappropriate
