- Difficulties in receptive language - understanding of language e.g. following directions Difficulties in expressive language - ability to express and thoughts and desires to others
- Delay in learning how to speak (after the age of two) or doesn’t talk at all
- Loss of previously learnt language
- May speak with an odd rhythm or pitch or in an abnormal tone of voice
- Difficulty starting a conversation or keeping it going
- Difficulty communicating needs or desires
- May not understand simple statements or questions
- Taking what is said too literally, missing humor, irony, and sarcasm
- Echolalia - delayed or immediate repeating of heard words
- Inappropriate word use
